MU Extension Launches “On My Own” Farm Program for Women

MU Extension Launches “On My Own” Farm Program for Women

By Blake Jackson

The University of Missouri Extension has launched a new program called “On My Own”, designed to support and empower women who are managing farms as first-time sole operators.

As part of the initiative, the “What the Hay?” series will offer practical guidance on topics such as forage, fertilizer, field fixes, and farm finances. The sessions will be held online from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. on Thursdays, Oct. 2 through Nov. 6.

MU Extension agricultural business specialist Amie Breshears, along with agronomists Travis Harper and Valerie Tate, will lead the four-part program. Participants are welcome to join individual sessions or attend the full series.

The schedule includes:

  • Oct. 2 - Forage selection: choosing the right species for hay.
  • Oct. 9 - Fertilizer strategies to increase productivity.
  • Oct. 30 - Weed control for hayfields and pastures.
  • Nov. 6 - Managing hay costs and making effective livestock feeding decisions.

Breshears emphasized the program’s value, stating, “The ‘On My Own’ workshops are informal, interactive and provide attendees with valuable information and resources they can take home. They also offer an excellent opportunity for networking and building connections with other participants in similar roles. While the programs are geared toward women producers, anyone may attend.”

For more details or to register, contact Amie Breshears at 660-438-5012 or abreshears@missouri.edu.
