New Center Boosts Mental Health

New Center Boosts Mental Health

By Blake Jackson

New York State has announced a $6 million investment to establish a new Community Wellness Center in the Bronx. The project will be located on the campus of the Bronx Psychiatric Center and operated by StartCare, a well-known behavioral healthcare provider.

The two-story building will cover 17,000 square feet and serve as a space for community support, health services, and wellness programs. The goal of this center is to provide holistic care that includes both mental and physical well-being. It will offer a safe and welcoming place where people can connect, learn, and seek help without fear or stigma.

“Fostering positive connections, togetherness and healthy wellness activities within a community can have a tremendous impact on mental well-being,” Commissioner Dr. Ann Sullivan said. “Under the stewardship of StartCare, we envision the Bronx Community Wellness Center as a hub that will promote holistic physical and mental wellness throughout the surrounding neighborhoods. This award reflects Governor Kathy Hochul’s continued effort to broaden access to mental health support and wellness in our communities statewide.”

The Office of Mental Health will provide $1 million in startup funding and an additional $1 million each year for five years to support operations. The center is expected to open early next year and will become an important resource for Bronx residents.

The facility offers modern features including office space, training rooms, a computer lab, a commercial kitchen for teaching, a health suite, and a greenhouse. It is also conveniently located near public transportation and residential areas, making it easily accessible.

The center aims to reduce the stigma around mental health by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. It will bring together people from different backgrounds and support community partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and wellness providers.

StartCare CEO Jonnel C. Doris said, “We are grateful to Governor Hochul and the New York State Office of Mental Health for making this transformative investment in community-based care. This new investment for our neighbors in the Bronx reflects our nearly 60-year history, our deep roots in New York, and our longstanding commitment to advancing health equity in communities that have too often been overlooked.

Under StartCare's stewardship, this center will serve as a stigma-free hub focused on individual and community mental health, wellness, healing, and connection. It represents a transformative example of our continued commitment to creating a welcoming, culturally responsive space where New Yorkers can build hope and resilience, strengthen community ties, and access whole-person, integrative supports.”

This project highlights the importance of strong community health systems and aims to build a healthier future for Bronx residents.
