New York farmers make progress despite wet weather

By Blake Jackson

The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in New York reported that there were 4.0 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending November 24, 2024. Weather conditions allowed farmers to make steady progress on various tasks, despite some moisture challenges.

Topsoil moisture was rated as 1% very short, 20% short, 73% adequate, and 6% surplus. Subsoil moisture followed a similar pattern with 2% very short, 16% short, 80% adequate, and 2% surplus. These figures suggest that while moisture levels were mostly adequate, some areas are still experiencing moisture shortages.

In terms of crop progress, New York farmers made significant strides. The corn harvest for grain reached 80%, up from 73% the previous week and slightly ahead of last year’s 79% and the 5-year average of 71%. Fall tillage was 95% complete, surpassing both last year’s 91% and the 5-year average of 86%.

The fourth cutting of hay reached 87%, progressing from 85% last week, and Winter wheat emergence improved to 95%, compared to 92% last week, and 93% last year.
