New York farmers had a productive week with favorable field conditions, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. There were 5 days suitable for fieldwork, allowing good progress on planting and crop development.
Moisture levels were mostly adequate, with 77% for topsoil and 82% for subsoil. Only a small percentage of both topsoil and subsoil experienced short or very short moisture supplies.
Here's a quick look at some key crop progress:
- Fruits: Apples are progressing well, with green and pink fruit development reaching 89% and 88% completion, respectively.
- Grains: Barley planting reached 77%, exceeding the 5-year average. Corn planting is at 79%, with emergence reaching 50%. Wheat is nearing maturity, with 64% of the crop headed.
- Vegetables: Planting progressed steadily for vegetables like cabbage (36%), onions (49%), potatoes (56%), and snap beans (16%).
- Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay is nearly complete at 65%, while other hay types are at 54% completion.
Overall, New York's agricultural conditions are promising for the 2024 season, with adequate moisture and good progress in planting and crop development.
