In September 2024, New York's milk production reached an impressive 1.32 billion pounds, marking a 1.2% increase compared to the same month in 2023. This rise underscores the resilience and productivity of the state's dairy industry.
The average milk price received by New York farmers in August 2024 was $24.20 per hundredweight, representing a $0.60 increase from July and a notable $3.40 higher than the average price in August of the previous year.
The state's dairy operations continue to thrive, maintaining a steady number of milk cows. In both 2023 and 2024, New York had 630,000 milk cows, illustrating stability in herd size.
Despite this consistency, there was a slight dip in the average milk yield per cow, from 2,070 pounds in September 2023 to 2,095 pounds in September 2024. However, this small change did not significantly impact overall milk production.
The pricing trend reflects the strong demand for milk in New York, as farmers benefit from higher market prices. Comparatively, the state's milk prices are competitive within the Northeastern region, surpassing neighboring states like Pennsylvania and Vermont.
As New York continues to adapt to market conditions and consumer preferences, its dairy industry remains a vital component of the state’s agricultural landscape, contributing significantly to both local economies and the broader food supply chain.
