NYCO Event to Cover Organic Farming and Weed Management

NYCO Event to Cover Organic Farming and Weed Management

By Blake Jackson

New York Certified Organic (NYCO) is set to host its annual farmer-to-farmer meeting, offering local farmers a valuable opportunity to connect, share experiences, and gain insights into organic farming practices.

This year’s gathering will take place on March 11, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Jordan Hall Auditorium, Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, NY.

The event requires no registration; however, attendees can receive updates regarding potential weather-related changes by contacting Bryan Brown at bjb342@cornell.edu or leaving a message at (315) 787-2432.

The agenda begins with a welcome session and coffee at 10:00 a.m., followed by discussions on harvest weed seed destruction led by Vipan Kumar from Cornell University.

A series of lightning talks will follow, covering key topics such as on-farm composting (Jean Bonhotal, Cornell Waste Management), animal integration in grain rotations (Adam Murray, PRO Dairy), and selecting optimal cover crops for fertility (Thomas Bjorkman, Cornell University). Additionally, Emily Reiss, CCA, will discuss comparing fertility sources, including off-farm manure.

At noon, attendees can enjoy a potluck lunch, followed by guided breakout discussions at 1:00 p.m. These discussions will focus on morning topics, agronomic challenges, and emerging issues of interest.

The event will conclude at 2:00 p.m., leaving farmers with valuable strategies to enhance their operations.
