Ohio State University Extension has released the 2026 Ohio Farm Custom Rates report, showing that rates for most custom farming services have increased since 2024 due to higher machinery, labor, and fuel costs.
The survey found notable rate increases for several field operations, including corn planting, corn harvesting, variable-rate fertilizer application, self-propelled spraying, disk chiseling, and tractor rentals. However, some custom services saw little change or slight declines.
New categories added to the 2026 report include vertical tillage, weed electrocution, late-season nitrogen application with coulters, and trucking services for silage and hay.
The report is based on responses from 343 farmers, custom operators, farm managers, and landowners across Ohio. Published rates generally include machinery, labor, fuel, and other operating expenses associated with the service.
Researchers emphasized that custom rates can vary depending on factors such as equipment size, field conditions, labor requirements, location, and market conditions. They also encourage both service providers and customers to calculate their own costs before establishing rates.
