Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc.,based in Edwardsville,Illinois and Doug Chapin from the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) were honored in the National Milk Producers Federation’s (NMPF) annual communication contest.
Prairie Farms won five categories and the prestigious "Best in Show: Writing" award for their article, “R-Homestead Holsteins – 150 Years of Family Tradition.” The article highlighted a family dairy farm’s history, challenges, and genetic innovations, providing a deep insight into the life of a small Illinois dairy.
Prairie Farms also secured second and third places in other categories, reflecting their consistent excellence in communication among NMPF’s member cooperatives.
The "Best in Show" award is selected from first-place winners in various categories, such as writing, publications, graphics, and special projects.
Doug Chapin, a farmer-owner from MMPA, received the Farmer Communicator of the Year award. Chapin was recognized for his effective communication on critical issues, including the H5N1 influenza virus outbreak in dairy cattle and efforts to modernize the Federal Milk Marketing Order system.
His leadership in advocating for science-based approaches during the H5N1 outbreak ensured dairy farmers’ voices were heard, balancing industry concerns and consumer trust.
Chapin’s role in the Federal Milk Marketing Order reform further strengthened his leadership position.
He testified on behalf of dairy farmers, supporting critical price-setting measures with data and personal experience. Chapin continues to serve as the chairman of the MMPA board and as a member of NMPF’s executive committee.
The NMPF contest winners were announced at a meeting of cooperative communicators and will be honored at NMPF’s annual meeting in Phoenix later this month.
