Proposed Cow Limit Bill Faces Backlash

Proposed Cow Limit Bill Faces Backlash

By Blake Jackson

New York State Senator Joseph Griffo has spoken out strongly against a newly proposed bill that seeks to limit the number of cows allowed on farms. He described the bill as harmful, especially for small, family-owned dairy farms in upstate New York.

Calling the proposal “preposterous,” Griffo argued that it is yet another example of downstate lawmakers trying to impose rules that do not suit the realities of rural communities. He said the legislation would increase the burden on farms already struggling to stay afloat.

Under the current Democratic leadership, Griffo said, New York farmers have faced rising pressure from new regulations and policies that make it harder to run their businesses. He believes this bill would continue that trend, making survival even more difficult for small farms and agribusinesses.

Griffo also expressed concern about the potential impact on large dairy-based companies like Chobani. The yogurt manufacturer relies on millions of pounds of milk sourced from local farms. He warned that such restrictions could disrupt the milk supply chain and harm both local economies and food production.

He emphasized the need to support farmers by reducing taxes, regulations and energy costs. Instead of limiting farm capacity, Griffo urged lawmakers to create policies that help agriculture grow and prosper.

The senator hopes to rally support against the bill and push for policies that favor growth and sustainability in New York’s agricultural sector.
