PSM Students Showcase Plant Research at MSU STEAM Expo

PSM Students Showcase Plant Research at MSU STEAM Expo

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University’s Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences (PSM) faculty, staff, and students participated in the 2025 MSU Science Festival STEAM Expo on April 5-6 at the STEM Building, sharing their research with the public in engaging and creative ways.

The event featured interactive activities throughout the month, with PSM representatives offering hands-on learning experiences during the first weekend. Visitors explored the world of plant science through innovative displays and interactive workshops.

The Student Phytopathological Organization for Research and Education (SPORE) introduced guests to plant pathology with a lab-themed table. Gloria Baker, leading the exhibit, emphasized the importance of outreach for developing communication and mentorship skills.

Many students contributed time, cultures, and materials, including Ryan Hamilton, Peyton Phillips, and others who helped prepare for the event.

Upstairs, Gaƫlle Cassin-Ross from the Plant Resilience Institute organized multiple plant science exhibits, providing the public with a closer look at ongoing research and its importance to agriculture and sustainability.

One popular exhibit, titled “Soil: A Medium for Life and Art,” led by graduate student Stephen Stresow, taught participants how to paint with soil. Inspired by artist and scientist Kristen Kurtz, the activity included filling in maps of Michigan counties with soil “paint.” Over 500 canvases were used during the session. Rachel Drobnak and other students helped guide visitors through the activity.

Nearby, Barret Wessel and the MSU soil judging team explained how soil types are categorized and used in competitions. Visitors were also introduced to research from Michelle Hulin’s plant pathology lab, where postdoc Daniel Maddock and undergraduate assistant Ambika Sharma engaged the crowd.

The event highlighted the creativity and dedication of MSU’s PSM team, inspiring young scientists and bringing plant research to life for all ages.
