Respirator Safety Requirements for Pesticide Handlers

Respirator Safety Requirements for Pesticide Handlers

By Blake Jackson

Agricultural operations that qualify as family-only farms must still comply with key requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency's Worker Protection Standard (WPS) when using pesticides.

These include following pesticide label instructions for personal protective equipment (PPE), observing restricted-entry intervals, and meeting application exclusion requirements.

When a pesticide label requires a respirator, handlers must complete several safety steps before using the product.

The first requirement is a medical evaluation to determine whether an individual is physically able to wear a respirator safely. This assessment can be completed online through approved providers or at an occupational health clinic.

After receiving medical clearance, handlers must undergo a respirator fit test to ensure the equipment provides a proper seal.

Fit testing is available through occupational health facilities or by using approved fit test kits. Individuals must be clean-shaven during the test and should bring the respirator they plan to use.

The final requirement is annual respirator training. This training may be completed by reviewing the respirator manufacturer's instructions, studying educational materials from the Pesticide Educational Resources Collaborative (PERC), or attending a formal training session.

Required topics include respirator selection, proper use, maintenance, cartridge replacement schedules, emergency procedures, storage, seal checks, and recognizing medical conditions that may affect safe respirator use.

Workers who cannot successfully complete a fit test should consider using a pesticide that does not require respiratory protection.

Another option is a loose-fitting Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR), which eliminates the need for annual fit testing but still requires a medical evaluation and yearly training.

The Worker Protection Standard is designed to reduce the health risks associated with pesticide exposure. Even when respiratory protection is not mandatory, wearing a respirator may provide additional safety during certain pesticide applications.
