Rice Field Day Showcases Latest Missouri Rice Advances

By Blake Jackson

The Missouri Rice Research & Merchandising Council (MRRMC) welcomed farmers, researchers, and agricultural industry representatives to its annual Rice Field Day on August 18, 2026, at the Missouri Rice Research Farm in the Bootheel region.

The research farm, operated by MRRMC for nearly four decades, is supported through Missouri rice growers’ checkoff funds and serves as a center for testing new rice varieties, production practices, and crop management strategies.

During the event, participants toured research plots and learned about the latest developments in rice production.

Presentations focused on topics such as weed and insect control, precision agriculture technologies for crop monitoring, and updates on new rice varieties from industry partners including HorizonAg, Nutrien, and RiceTec.

"This is Missouri rice farmers' opportunity to see their checkoff dollars at work," said MRRMC Chairman Rance Daniels.

The day concluded with a luncheon sponsored by Bernard Crop Insurance, featuring updates on policy, advocacy, and market development efforts. State Senator Jason Bean discussed his involvement in the Monsanto v. Durnell case and related agricultural issues.

Representatives from USA Rice also addressed attendees. Discussions included federal policy priorities, congressional developments, rice promotion efforts, and consumer trends, particularly the growing interest in U.S.-grown jasmine rice. In addition, updates were provided on current and upcoming activities supported by MRRMC.

By combining field research demonstrations with policy and market discussions, the event highlighted the connection between on-farm innovation, industry advocacy, and market development.

Organizers said the annual field day continues to provide Missouri rice growers with valuable insight into the research and initiatives being conducted to support the long-term success and competitiveness of the state's rice industry.
