Spring is in full bloom at the University of Kentucky as the Facilities Management team leads seasonal improvements across campus.
From planting vibrant flower beds to switching over heating systems, every corner of campus is being prepared to welcome students, families, and visitors.
UK Grounds crews are busy creating show beds filled with blue, white, red, and yellow flowers in key locations. These floral displays are timed to enhance graduation photos and summer events.
“One of our main goals is creating a physical campus environment that our students, faculty, staff and visitors can enjoy,” said Corey Baker, grounds manager.
Along with new plantings, turf damaged by winter weather is being revitalized, and hedges are trimmed for visibility and healthy growth. Teams are also repairing potholes to improve road safety.
While the grounds flourish, the Campus Maintenance team ensures building comfort during shifting temperatures. By draining and servicing chilled water coils in more than 200 buildings, they maintain energy-efficient transitions from heating to cooling.
The university’s cooling system utilizes free cooling, which draws on outdoor temperatures to reduce energy use. “This approach not only helps maintain comfort in campus buildings but also aligns with Facilities Management’s commitment to sustainable and economical building operations,” said Harold “Tree” Sandford, associate director of maintenance.
The Utilities and Energy Management team supports these efforts by preparing chillers and cooling towers for spring. At the same time, they are getting the heating system ready for next season, including installing a new central boiler.
These behind-the-scenes efforts make the campus safe, sustainable, and student-ready, ensuring the University of Kentucky continues its mission of innovation, service, and transformation for the Commonwealth.
