To celebrate Ag Literacy Week (March 17-21, 2025), North Dakota Ag in the Classroom is offering sugar science kits to fifth and sixth-grade educators. These kits are provided in partnership with the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association and focus on incorporating agriculture into classroom learning.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring encourages teachers to take advantage of this resource. “Students will learn about agriculture and science through STEM activities that align with North Dakota standards. With Ag Literacy Week and upcoming agriculture celebrations, this is the perfect time to incorporate these materials.”
The first 25 educators who qualify and apply will receive the kits, which include science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities, as well as supplies and additional educational resources. Teachers can use the kits until April 23, 2025, and are required to complete follow-up surveys from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture for reporting purposes.
These sugar science kits provide a hands-on learning experience, helping students explore agriculture, food production, and scientific concepts through interactive experiments. They aim to enhance agricultural literacy and demonstrate the real-world applications of STEM education.
Educators interested in applying can access the application at https://www.ndda.nd.gov/sugarscience. For further inquiries, they may contact Agriculture Business Development Coordinator Heather Lang at 701-328-2308 or hlang@nd.gov.
This initiative supports agricultural education and promotes engaging classroom experiences, ensuring students gain a deeper understanding of agriculture’s role in daily life.
