Summer Food Program Continues for Students

Summer Food Program Continues for Students

By Blake Jackson

Governor Beshear has confirmed that Kentucky will continue its Summer Food Service Program to support student nutrition while schools remain closed for summer break. This initiative, hosted by schools and community partners in low-income areas, ensures that around 450,000 children receive regular meals during the summer months.

“Students aged six to 18, who are current recipients of SNAP, the Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program or kinship care, are going to be automatically enrolled in the program,” said Governor Beshear.

In addition to free meals, the state will provide a one-time benefit of $120 per eligible student. This benefit helps families buy nutritious food to keep children healthy and nourished.

Students between the ages of six and 18, who currently receive support from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program (KTAP), or kinship care, will be automatically enrolled in this program.

For families whose children are not automatically included, there is an option to apply for the benefit. The deadline to apply is August 15, allowing more households to receive the help they need.

The program reflects Kentucky’s continued efforts to support families facing food insecurity, especially during the summer months when school meal services are not available.

This support not only ensures that children have access to healthy meals but also helps reduce stress on families struggling with food costs. It is part of a broader effort to improve the well-being of students and maintain a strong community support system during school breaks.

Families are encouraged to contact their school districts or community partners for information on how to access the program or apply if needed.
