UCM Farms Meat Now Available in Store

UCM Farms Meat Now Available in Store

By Blake Jackson

The University of Central Missouri (UCM) has taken a major step in hands-on learning and community involvement.

UCM Farms has partnered with the University Store in Warrensburg to sell locally raised meat, marking the first time these student-produced products are available in a retail location.

Previously, UCM Farms only offered meat in bulk or through a commercial freezer at the Trap and Skeet Range.

With this new storefront partnership, pork cuts like chops, steaks, brats, and breakfast sausage are now easily available in the campus store freezer. Customized cuts can still be ordered from the shooting range.

“Selling UCM-raised meat and produce out of the University Store is a big deal because it bridges the gap for our students to take our livestock all the way from conception to consumption,” said University Farm Director Travis Hume.

Students participate in every stage of the process, from breeding livestock to selling final products. This full-circle experience is part of UCM’s commitment to providing experiential learning in agriculture.

Currently, only pork is available, but beef, goat, and fresh produce may be added soon based on customer interest. Leah Sobba, assistant director of merchandise management, said the response has been very positive. “It's always exciting for students to see their hard work being used in real-life situations,” Sobba said.

UCM Farms houses Simmental and Angus cattle, grass-fed and grain-finished for educational and production purposes.

Plans include expanding with more heifers and bulls, as well as constructing a new hog barn. The new rifle shooting range is already complete, and farm fundraising continues.

Pork, beef, and goat production are essential parts of Missouri's agricultural economy, ranking in the top 10 commodities nationally.

UCM Farms not only supports local food systems but also enhances education in farming and sustainability.
