UK Awards Celebrate Champions of Local Food Growth

UK Awards Celebrate Champions of Local Food Growth

By Blake Jackson

The Food Connection at the University of Kentucky continues to strengthen the state’s local food economy by building partnerships and promoting innovative strategies that support farmers, producers, students, and consumers.

During the 2026 Kentucky Local Food Systems Summit, the organization recognized three individuals for their outstanding contributions to advancing local food systems across the state.

The annual Farm and Food Champion Awards honor leaders who demonstrate dedication, innovation, and service in supporting agriculture and building healthier communities. The Bill Best Food & Farm Steward Award was presented to Anna Haas, program director of local food connection at What Chefs Want. Her work has helped connect Kentucky farmers with restaurants, schools, and healthcare organizations, expanding market opportunities and access to locally grown food.

The Local Food Systems Innovator Award was given to CheyAnne Fant, director of nutrition services and afterschool programs for Barren County Schools. She has played a key role in developing one of Kentucky’s leading Farm to School programs, strengthening partnerships between schools and local farmers.

The Legacy Award was presented to M. Scott Smith, director of The Arboretum and former dean at the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. His long career has made a lasting impact on education, agriculture, and natural resource stewardship.

The summit brought together a wide range of stakeholders to explore opportunities for further strengthening Kentucky’s local food network.
