USDA Cancels Chester County Food Bank Orders

USDA Cancels Chester County Food Bank Orders

By Blake Jackson

The Chester County Food Bank (CCFB) is facing a significant challenge after the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) canceled its food orders from the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) for the quarter beginning April 1, 2025. The cancellation includes key food items such as cheese, pork chops, chicken breasts, and eggs, totaling a loss of $250,000. These food supplies were designated for the most vulnerable families in Chester County, whose income is at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.

If this trend persists, the food bank could lose up to $1 million in USDA food supplies, which will strain its capacity to meet the increasing demand for food. To compensate for the lost food, CCFB would need to purchase replacement items at retail prices, further increasing costs.

Additionally, the Chester County Food Bank has already faced a $145,000 loss from the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA), which supports local food partnerships with Chester County farmers. Without this funding, both food access and local agriculture will be severely impacted.

“The cancellation of these orders are going to have a significant impact on our operations, and they couldn’t come at a worse time” said Andrea Youndt, CCFB CEO. “We are currently experiencing a cost of living crisis in Chester County and Southeastern Pennsylvania. We need more support now, not less.”

In response, the CCFB continues to work closely with local growers, using its own funds to purchase necessary food items. However, with the food bank distributing five million pounds of food annually to over 40,000 residents, these losses could have a devastating impact.

“The best way for the general public to help at this point in time is to be an advocate” said Nick Imbesi, Director of Community Relations. “Your voice has power, and we urge you to contact your federal lawmakers and request they rescind this decision immediately.”

Despite these challenges, the Chester County Food Bank remains committed to serving its community and providing vital support to those in need.
