The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension is hosting a “Save A Calf, Save A Cow” workshop series aimed at dairy and beef producers, as well as dairy employees, including a session offered in Spanish.
The program is designed to strengthen participants’ skills and confidence in preparing cows for calving, performing obstetric techniques, and caring for newborn calves.
Through practical instruction and discussion, attendees will learn key strategies to improve the health and survival of both cows and calves during the calving process.
The workshop will cover topics ranging from transition cow nutrition and body condition management to identifying the early signs of labor. Participants will also gain guidance on managing challenging deliveries and providing proper newborn calf care.
Additional topics include ensuring calves receive a strong start through effective colostrum management, understanding cow nutrition before and after calving, and recognizing when professional assistance may be needed during labor.
The program will also review various calving equipment options, including proper sanitation and maintenance, along with worker safety practices and biosecurity measures.
The workshop costs $20 per person and will be offered in person at two locations in Wisconsin. Sessions are scheduled for April 7 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in Medford and April 8 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m. in Chippewa Falls.
Registration and payment must be submitted by March 31, while the Spanish-language session requires registration by March 17. Participation is limited to the first 20 paid participants per session, so early registration is encouraged.
