UW-Madison FISC Ag Forward Showcases Dairy Research

By Blake Jackson

FISC Ag Forward, a short course presented by the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course (FISC), was held on campus January 22, with another session tentatively scheduled for March. The program introduced participants to key agricultural resources and research initiatives shaping Wisconsin’s farm industry.

Attendees toured the Dairy Cattle Center and learned about the Dairy Innovation Hub, a state-funded collaboration among UW-Madison, UW-River Falls, and UW-Platteville.

Matt Ruark, professor of soil and environmental sciences and faculty director of the Dairy Innovation Hub, outlined how the partnership supports research and development efforts that strengthen Wisconsin’s $52.8 billion dairy sector. The initiative focuses on advancing economically viable, environmentally responsible, and socially sustainable dairy production.

Mike Peters, director of UW-Madison’s Agricultural Research Stations, highlighted the network of research stations located throughout the state. Peters described each station’s specialized research areas, facilities, and potential employment pathways for students.

Participants also connected with FISC alumna Rachel Zwieg during a networking lunch. Zwieg and her husband, Kyle, were recently recognized as National Outstanding Young Farmers.

Additional 2026 FISC programs include a Beekeeping Short Course and a Turfgrass Apprenticeship Program.
