Wisdom Takes Flight at Youth Leadership Event

Wisdom Takes Flight at Youth Leadership Event

By Blake Jackson

Youth leadership programs often begin with traditions that highlight the value of guidance and experience. In many student organizations, officers follow an opening ceremony that defines their roles. One symbolic role is that of the advisor, often represented by an owl — a long-standing emblem of knowledge and wisdom. Advisors are trusted voices, offering guidance shaped by experience and a desire to see the next generation succeed.

This idea of wisdom guiding youth is central to an upcoming leadership event hosted by Missouri Farm Bureau (MOFB) on April 8. Around 400 high school students, many of them active members of youth agricultural organizations, will travel to Jefferson City for a day of connection, learning, and inspiration.

In the morning, students will explore the Missouri State Capitol, where they’ll meet elected officials and gain insight into the legislative process. This real-world experience offers a closer look at how government works and the role young people can play in shaping their communities.

Later, students will visit the MOFB headquarters, where they will attend a unique session with former youth organization leaders. This “parliament” will not be a formal meeting, but it will offer something just as valuable — wisdom shared from individuals who have dedicated their lives to agriculture, leadership, and public service. With over two hundred years of combined experience, these mentors bring a rich perspective on growth, perseverance, and impact.

As the students listen to stories and advice from these seasoned individuals, they are encouraged to think about their own potential. Many young people benefit from the support of advisors in their schools, but hearing similar messages from different voices can leave a lasting impression.

Missouri is home to several species of owls, and just like in nature, each one represents qualities found in great leaders — awareness, insight, and resilience. The upcoming Youth Leadership Day aims to inspire students to embrace those same qualities and recognize the opportunities that lie ahead.
