Alejandro Plastina has been appointed as the new director of the Rural and Farm Finance Policy Analysis Center (RaFF) at the University of Missouri, effective September 1, 2024.
Joining the faculty of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) as an associate professor within the Division of Applied Social Sciences (DASS), Plastina brings extensive expertise in agricultural economics and finance.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Plastina highlighted his commitment to enhancing RaFF's research, extension, and educational initiatives. His vision is to position RaFF as a pivotal resource for agricultural decision-makers not only in Missouri but across the nation.
Currently serving as an extension economist at Iowa State University and holding positions with prestigious agricultural organizations, Plastina is recognized for his specialization in farm business management and financial strategies.
He has contributed significantly to agricultural policy discussions and academic leadership, including roles at the Iowa State University-Iowa Bankers Association Agricultural Credit School and the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.
Plastina's career spans roles at the International Cotton Advisory Committee and leadership positions within agricultural economics associations. He holds advanced degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is noted for his research contributions in agricultural production and technology.
His appointment is expected to strengthen DASS's agricultural finance expertise and elevate RaFF's profile as a leading center for unbiased agricultural analysis. Funded by Congress, RaFF plays a crucial role in providing policymakers with region-specific insights to inform effective agricultural policies nationwide.
Plastina looks forward to collaborating with the University of Missouri community, aiming to foster excellence and impactful contributions from RaFF and DASS, further solidifying the university's reputation as a leader in agricultural research and policy analysis.
