The state's Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is offering up to $200,000 in grants through the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin (BLBW) program.
This initiative aims to bolster Wisconsin's agriculture and food industries by supporting businesses that process, market, and distribute locally grown products.
To be eligible, applicants must be involved in Wisconsin's food system, from farming to retail. Grant funds can be used for various expenses, including staff salaries, consultant fees, and equipment purchases.
However, projects must demonstrate a significant financial commitment by matching grant funds with at least 50% in cash or in-kind contributions.
Successful applicants will see their projects funded for up to three years, with grant amounts ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. In return, funded projects are expected to report on increased local food sales, job creation, and new investments.
The BLBW program has a proven track record. Since its inception in 2008, it has awarded over $2.9 million to 117 projects, generating more than $14 million in local food sales and creating hundreds of jobs.
DATCP will select projects based on their potential to expand market access for Wisconsin-grown food and stimulate economic growth within the state.
To help potential applicants craft strong proposals, DATCP will host a webinar on August 6th. Applications are due September 9th.
