Bob Pepple Honored as Penn State Dairy Science Alumnus

By Blake Jackson

Bob Pepple of Oxford has been named the 2025 Distinguished Dairy Science Alumnus by Penn State’s Department of Animal Science, recognizing his significant contributions to the dairy industry.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in dairy production from Penn State in 1968, Pepple worked on his family’s commercial dairy farm for four years. In 1972, he and his wife, Jane, also a Penn State alumna, purchased their own farm in Chester County.

Over the years, they developed a genetically exceptional dairy herd that had a lasting impact on the global dairy industry.

The Pep-L-Lea herd produced numerous outstanding Holsteins, with bulls sold to at least five artificial insemination companies in the U.S. and exported internationally. Much of their herd traces back to Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation, one of the most influential Holstein sires in history.

“Bob Pepple’s work advancing the genetics of the Holstein breed and operationalizing a scientific approach to dairy farming in a way that impacted Holstein genetics internationally makes him very worthy of receiving our Dairy Science Distinguished Alumnus award,” said Rebecca Krisher, head of the Department of Animal Science.

“He is highly respected in the dairy industry, and particularly in Pennsylvania, for his integrity, common-sense approach to dairy farming and work ethic demonstrated over decades.”

Bob and Jane were founding members of the Penn State Dairymen's Club and have been active in numerous Holstein and youth agriculture organizations. They have supported the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein, Chester County 4-H, and numerous youth awards across the state.

“When I received the phone call informing me of this recognition, I could hardly believe it was true,” said Pepple. “When I think about all those who have previously received this distinction individuals I have respected and admired - I am humbled and honored. I am blessed and thank everyone who has made this possible.”

Pepple will be formally recognized on Oct. 24 at a departmental reception ahead of the Penn State Dairy Science Club Fall Classic.
