The Missouri Chapter of Women Owning Woodlands is set to host a series of chain saw safety events this November, as announced by Sarah Higgins, a natural resources specialist with the University of Missouri Extension.
The program will kick off with three virtual sessions scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on November 7, 14, and 21. Following these online discussions, an in-person workshop will take place on Saturday, November 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This hands-on session will be held at the MU Wurdack Extension and Education Center in Cook Station, allowing participants to apply the knowledge they’ve gained.
“Women-focused programming aims to create a welcoming, nonjudgmental learning environment where women feel more comfortable to participate and ask questions when surrounded by peers,” says Higgins. “This workshop will leave women feeling more confident and competent with a chain saw to help them achieve their land stewardship goals.”
The workshop will cover essential topics such as personal protective equipment, chain saw maintenance, safety in the field, and cutting techniques.
The curriculum is designed for beginners and specifically tailored to meet the needs of women, including guidance on correctly fitting chaps and accommodating upper body strength limitations.
