Fall weed control strategies for diverse crops

Fall weed control strategies for diverse crops

By Blake Jackson

Fall is an ideal time to control weeds in various crops. By targeting weeds before they mature and set seed, farmers can significantly reduce their populations in subsequent years.

Controlling Weeds in Fallow Fields

For fallow fields, a tank mix of 2,4-D ester, glyphosate, and metribuzin is effective in controlling marestail and other winter annual weeds. However, it's crucial to apply these herbicides when the weeds are young and actively growing.

Weed Control in Small Grains

Several herbicide options are available for controlling weeds in small grains, including:

  • Common Chickweed: Harmony Extra and Quelex are effective, but resistance is emerging. Tank-mixing with Starane Ultra or adding Metricor can enhance control.
  • Marestail: 2,4-D, dicamba, Huskie, Quelex, and Stinger can provide control, especially when applied to small seedlings.
  • Speedwell: Harmony Extra + Quelex or Starane Ultra can control ivyleaf speedwell. Finesse can also be effective, especially for annual speedwell.
  • Brome Species: Anthem Flex/Zidua, Osprey, and PowerFlex are effective for controlling brome species like downy brome, chess, and cheat.
  • Annual Ryegrass: Anthem Flex/Zidua, Axiom, Osprey, and PowerFlex HL are effective options.
  • Annual Bluegrass: Axiom, Anthem Flex/Zidua, Metricor, Finesse, and Osprey can control annual bluegrass.
  • Roughstalk Bluegrass: Osprey provides the most consistent control, but Axial and PowerFlex HL can also be effective. Fall applications are generally more effective, but early spring applications can also help.

When applying herbicides, consider factors like temperature, weed size, and herbicide compatibility. Always follow label instructions and safety guidelines.

By implementing effective weed control strategies, farmers can improve crop yields and reduce the need for future herbicide applications.
