Farm to school brings fresh produce daily

Students across Michigan enjoy fresh, locally grown produce in their school cafeterias, thanks to the Farm to School program.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary this October, National Farm to School Month highlights the connection between kids, communities, and local food systems across the U.S.

During a recent State Board of Education meeting, officials discussed the positive impact of Michigan's Farm to School program.

“We appreciate the strong partnership between Michigan’s farming communities and our schools,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. The program contributes to student health and supports Michigan’s agricultural economy.

The program provides students with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, including apples, blueberries, cherries, potatoes, and more.

Detroit Public Schools Community District senior director Kevin Frank shared how the district purchased over a million dollars of local produce in the past two years, providing healthy food to students and supporting local farmers.

Additionally, the “10 Cents a Meal” program reimburses schools for purchasing Michigan-grown produce, helping cover food costs, transportation, and labor expenses. In 2024, 269 grantees across 66 counties benefited from this program, further boosting local agriculture.

October also features Michigan Apple Crunch Day on Oct. 17, where people across the state celebrate by biting into fresh Michigan apples. Events like this highlight the importance of fresh, healthy food in schools and promote the benefits of local produce.

Michigan’s Farm to School program continues to enhance nutrition, support local farms, and enrich student education, making it a win-win for everyone involved.
