Kansas Supports Specialty Crop Growth

Kansas Supports Specialty Crop Growth

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is now accepting applications for the Fiscal Year 2026 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. The funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service and distributed to states to support specialty crop development.

This program helps projects and organizations improve the competitiveness of specialty crops across Kansas. Grants support efforts such as marketing and promotion, research and development, improving access and availability, and addressing industry challenges at the local, regional, and national levels.

The USDA defines specialty crops as “fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture.” These crops play an important role in strengthening agricultural diversity and supporting economic growth.

Applications will be reviewed by an external evaluation team. Proposals will be rated based on how well they enhance the specialty crop industry in Kansas and contribute to the state’s economy. Final funding decisions will be made by the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture after reviewing recommendations.

All applications must be submitted to KDA by 5:00 p.m. on April 17, 2026. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the 2026 Kansas Request for Applications document available on the KDA website before applying.

Specialty Crop Block Grant funding is awarded to states based on recent acreage and production value of specialty crops. In 2026, Kansas is expected to receive approximately $325,000 to distribute through this program.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture aims to create a strong and sustainable agricultural environment across the state. Through programs like this, the agency continues to promote long-term agricultural success, economic stability, and industry outreach across Kansas.
