Laclede county hosts first Ag week to celebrate Ag

By Blake Jackson

Laclede County, Missouri, is gearing up for its inaugural Laclede County Commission Agriconomy Week, running from September 30th to October 4th, 2024. This week-long celebration aims to highlight the importance of agriculture in the county's economy and foster collaboration within the agricultural community.

"Growing Laclede County's Economy Through Agricultural Entrepreneurship" is the theme chosen for the event, reflecting the Commission's commitment to supporting local agriculture. Randy Angst, Laclede County presiding commissioner, emphasized this by stating their excitement to expand the previous successful ag tour into a full week of engaging activities.

The week offers a diverse range of events for both farmers and policymakers. Participants can learn practical skills like black walnut hulling, enjoy a farm-to-table lunch while gaining industry knowledge, and expand their understanding through an educational agriculture summit and expo hosted by the University of Missouri Extension.

Additionally, the traditional Laclede County Commission Agriculture Tour, offering exclusive access to family-owned farms, will continue as an invitation-only event.

Ben Havens, a key figure in the county's agricultural scene, will serve as the 2024 Ag Week Honorary Chair. He, along with other members of the extension council, plays a crucial role in planning this event. Ashley Brown, a regional economic development specialist with MU Extension, will lead the organization of the week's activities and the Commission Ag Tour.

Brown highlights the significance of Ag Week, stating that it emphasizes Laclede County's impressive contribution of nearly $400 million annually to Missouri's economy through agriculture, fishing, and forestry.

Beyond the traditional Ag Tour, the week promises an Agriculture and Economy Summit and Expo, a farm-to-table learning lunch, and the introduction of new awards recognizing young individuals making a difference in agriculture.

This comprehensive Agriconomy Week promises to be a valuable learning and networking experience for all those involved in Laclede County's vibrant agricultural sector.
