Mainspring energy to invest $109 million in Pennsylvania

By Blake Jackson

Governor Josh Shapiro announced a significant economic development win for Pennsylvania: Mainspring Energy, a manufacturer of innovative, fuel-flexible power generators, will invest over $109 million to expand its U.S. operations in Allegheny County and create at least 597 new jobs.

The company has selected the Northfield Industrial Park in Findlay Township, Coraopolis, for its new 292,000-square-foot facility. This expansion is a result of Pennsylvania's successful competition against other states, demonstrating the Commonwealth's attractiveness for businesses seeking growth and innovation.

Mainspring's innovative linear generator offers a clean and reliable power solution for commercial businesses. The company plans to manufacture up to 1,000 generators annually, capable of meeting the electricity needs of 250,000 U.S. homes.

The Commonwealth provided significant support for Mainspring's expansion, including a $5.679 million Pennsylvania First grant and a $3 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) award.

Additionally, the company will benefit from tax deductions through the Qualified Manufacturing Innovation and Reinvestment Deduction (QMIRD) and Airport Land Development Zone (ALDZ) programs.

“Energy and manufacturing are two of the crucial industries the Shapiro Administration is focusing on in Pennsylvania’s 10-year Economic Development Strategy,” said DCED Secretary Rick Siger. “Mainspring’s expansion into Pennsylvania is a great example of what the Commonwealth has to offer to companies in these industries. We’re going to continue making significant investments to attract more companies like Mainspring to boost our economy and create real opportunity for Pennsylvanians.”

Mainspring's decision to expand in Pennsylvania is also influenced by the region's history in energy, innovation, and manufacturing. The company received an $87 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to support its growth.

Governor Shapiro's Economic Development Strategy focuses on key industries like energy and manufacturing. This investment in Mainspring Energy demonstrates the administration's commitment to attracting businesses, creating jobs, and fostering economic growth in Pennsylvania.
