Governor Josh Shapiro has announced a $3 million investment in Folkland Foods, a leading organic potato supplier based in Waterford, Erie County.
This funding, through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP), will support the company's expansion and create up to 50 new jobs in the region.
Folkland Foods, a family-owned business with a three-generation history in potato farming, plans to expand its operations, transition more acreage to organic farming, and introduce a range of organic potato products.
“I’m excited to announce this $3 million investment in Folkland Foods, a company that is leading the way in organic farming and sustainable practices, built on hard work and know-how developed right here in Pennsylvania," said Governor Shapiro. "This expansion will create 50 new, good-paying jobs and significantly boost the local economy in Erie County, all while reinforcing Pennsylvania’s reputation as a leader in agriculture and food production."
The RACP grant will fund the construction of new facilities, including a manufacturing facility, a freezer warehouse, and a potato warehouse. The project also includes site improvements and a wastewater treatment plant.
"Folkland’s vision is to offer products that have minimal ingredients, so consumers know exactly what is in the product," said Brian Garlick, Folkland's Chief Operating Officer. "All simple ingredients that you would find in your cupboards at home. Full ingredient transparency is hard to find today and eliminating pesticides used in conventional farming practices is the first step in providing a 'better-for-you' product."
The project is expected to begin processing potatoes for retail sale early next year. Folkland Foods will initially offer organic farm fries in three flavors, with plans to expand its product line to include potato puffs, sweet potato items, and roasties.
The Troyer family, owners of Folkland Foods, have a long history in the potato farming industry, dating back to 1967. Their commitment to community, family, and employees is evident in their vision for the company.
The RACP grant is part of Governor Shapiro's Economic Development Strategy, which focuses on key sectors like agriculture and aims to revitalize Pennsylvania's economy.
This investment aligns with other initiatives, such as the Agricultural Innovation Grant Program, which supports new solutions and technologies in agriculture.
