USDA Aid Supports New York Farmers

USDA Aid Supports New York Farmers

By Blake Jackson

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a major financial support program for specialty crop growers. The program, called the Assistance for Specialty Crop Farmers (ASCF), will provide a total of $1.625 billion to eligible producers. This is a one-time payment designed to help farmers manage costs and maintain production.

The ASCF program offers payments based on acres planted during the 2025 crop year. This support aims to reduce financial pressure on farmers and ensure continued production of important specialty crops such as fruits and vegetables. Grapes are included in the eligible crops under this program.

Farmers growing fresh grapes can receive $650 per acre under Tier 1, while those producing grapes for processing can receive $225 per acre under Tier 2. However, the maximum payment allowed per producer is $250,000. This limit ensures fair distribution of funds among different producers.

To qualify for the program, farmers must have reported their eligible crop acres for the 2025 season by April 24, 2026. This requirement ensures that only verified crop data is used for payment calculation.

The USDA has also provided a clear timeline for application. Online enrollment began on June 1, 2026. Farmers can also apply in person at their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices starting June 8, 2026. The final date to submit applications is August 7, 2026. Producers are advised to apply before the deadline to receive benefits.

This program acts as a bridge to support farmers during challenging conditions. It is especially useful for specialty crop growers who often face higher production costs and market risks. Financial assistance like this helps maintain stability in agriculture and ensures a steady food supply.

Farmers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and secure financial support to strengthen their operations during the current growing season.
