USDA Funding Boosts Fire Protection in Genoa

USDA Funding Boosts Fire Protection in Genoa

By Blake Jackson

The Town of Genoa in Wisconsin is set to strengthen its emergency response capabilities through new federal funding that will support the purchase of a modern fire engine. The investment aims to help local first responders continue providing reliable and effective emergency services to residents throughout the community.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has awarded a $450,000 grant to the Town of Genoa Volunteer Fire Department. The funding will be used to replace a fire engine that has been in service for approximately 30 years.

Upgrading this essential equipment will help ensure firefighters have access to dependable resources when responding to emergencies.

Volunteer fire departments play a crucial role in rural communities, often serving as the first line of defense during fires, accidents, and other emergency situations. Reliable vehicles and modern equipment are essential for maintaining response readiness and protecting lives and property.

Andrew C. Iverson, USDA Rural Development Wisconsin State Director, emphasized the importance of supporting rural emergency services. He said, “Volunteer firefighters play a vital role in protecting rural communities. This new engine will help ensure the Town of Genoa Volunteer Fire Department has the tools and resources needed to keep residents safe.”

The funding highlights ongoing efforts to improve public safety infrastructure in rural areas. Modern firefighting equipment can improve response efficiency, increase reliability, and help emergency personnel better serve community needs.

Representative Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) also praised the investment and its impact on local residents. He stated, “Just because we choose to live in rural communities doesn’t mean we deserve any less. Our families deserve world-class emergency services and public safety, no matter where they call home. I’m proud to bring this funding home to our community and support our brave first responders who work diligently to ensure our communities are safe. The people of Western Wisconsin deserve to know that their voices matter, their needs are heard, and their tax dollars are coming back to make a difference in the communities we’re proud to call home.”

The grant was provided through USDA Rural Development’s Community Facilities Program, which offers affordable financial assistance for essential facilities that promote safety, development, and quality of life in rural communities. The program helps fund projects that support emergency services, healthcare, education, and other important public needs.

Beyond fire protection projects, USDA Rural Development continues to invest in initiatives that improve transportation systems, broadband access, electric infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and economic development across rural America.

The new fire engine will provide the Town of Genoa Volunteer Fire Department with updated equipment needed to meet current emergency response demands. By replacing outdated apparatus and strengthening local emergency services, the project will help improve safety, preparedness, and community resilience for years to come.
