Wisconsin Dairy Drives a $52.8 Billion Economy

Wisconsin’s dairy industry remains a major force in the state’s economy, even after National Dairy Month has passed. Throughout the year, dairy farms and agricultural organizations provide opportunities for consumers to learn how milk and dairy products move from farms to tables, while also highlighting sustainability, innovation, and the future of farming.

Dairy contributes an estimated $52.8 billion to Wisconsin’s economy annually, making it one of the state’s most important agricultural sectors. From county fairs and the Wisconsin State Fair to major industry gatherings, dairy plays a central role in bringing farmers, consumers, businesses, and visitors together.

One of the state’s most significant agricultural events is World Dairy Expo in Madison. The international event showcases dairy cattle, genetics, nutrition, farm equipment, technology, and educational programs. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) uses World Dairy Expo as an opportunity to welcome international delegations and introduce them to Wisconsin’s agricultural products, services, and technologies.

These relationships are important to Wisconsin’s broader agriculture, food, and forestry industries. The state has recorded its five highest annual export totals for these sectors during the past five years.
